The Obama Dog
I'm sure that everyone knew I would get around to this subject soon, but I wanted to try and find some interesting facts to tell you about, and frankly, since I don't know that much about some breeds, I always like to learn some new stuff too.
We have heard that The President and his First Family are thinking about getting a Portguese Water Dog for their home, and that perhaps they do agree that rescuing a dog is better, but it is hard to find a Porty, as they are called in short, needing a rescue. It seems pretty obvious to me that as busy as Mr. Obama is, he has sent someone to check with The Washington Humane Society, but just in case, I woke my Mouse Person and asked him to take me there. No Porty's.
So then we went to our friends at PET FINDER and guess who we found: 11-month old Sadie!

Sadie is presently living in a rather new Rescue in Prosser, Washington. This is what they have to say:
Sadie has come to A PAW UP to find a new home, sadly her former owner has had a stroke and cannot work with her, and she's energetic! Nothing a good fenced yard and lots of playtime won't cure, though!
Sadie is 11mos. of age, has been spayed and microchipped and is available for adoption NOW.
She is good with kitties (will chase if they run, but she's just playing) and other dogs.
Previous breed experience or a strong desire to learn required.
She looks full blooded but of course as a rescue we don't have papers for her. She does not shed and will need to be clipped for her whole life, and brushed regularly.
Adoption fee of $400, as Sadie is a hero dog and can help other dogs in our rescue who have needed above average medical costs.
Now I realize that there is a chance that Sadie might not be a full-blooded Porty, but she surely does look like it, since we went to our Friends at Wikipedia, and found out that a true Porty can have some white of her and still be perfect. But anyway we wrote an e-mail to the nice people at A PAW UP RESCUE and asked them if they had contacted The Obama Family, but we know how our blogs get around, so maybe The Obama's will read about Sadie here. Then EVERYONE will know what a wonderful reporter I am because I have found a dog for The White House!
Want to know some more about Portugese Water Dogs? Go visit Wikipedia if you can find your Mouse Person. I took a few notes and here they are:
A Portuguese Water Dog is first described in 1297 in a monk’s account of a drowning sailor who was pulled from the sea by a dog with a "black coat, the hair long and rough, cut to the first rib and with a tail tuft".
The PWD was a breed on the verge of extinction when, during the 1930s, Dr. Vasco Bensaúde, a wealthy Portuguese Sephardic Jewish shipping magnate, began to seek out fishermen's dogs and utilize them in a breeding program to re-establish the breed. Bensaúde's kennel was named Algarbiorum, and his most famous dog was Leão (1931-1942), a very "type-y" fisherman's stud dog who was bred to so many different females that about half of the pedigreed Portuguese Water Dogs in existence can trace their lineage back to him. Bensaúde was aided by two Portuguese veterinarians, Dr. Francisco Pinto Soares and Dr. Manuel Fernandes Marques. His work was carried on by Conchita Cintron de Castelo Branco, to whom he gave his last 17 PWDs and all his archives.
Dr. António Cabral was the founder of the Avalade kennels in Portugal. Ch. Charlie de Avalade (Charlie), a brown-coated dog, and C. B. Baluarte de Avalade (Balu) were two of his many famous PWDs. He registered his first PWD in 1954, after Bensaúde had pioneered the re-establishment of the breed in Portugal. Cabral worked with Carla Molinari, Deyanne Miller, Sonja Santos and others to establish PWDs in the US. The "Mark of Cabral" is a triangular shape of different color/textured hair, usually a few inches from the base of the tail. You can see it more easily on a fresh lion clip -- it can look like the clipper got too close.
Deyanne Miller is the single person most responsible for the rise of the PWD in America. In 1972, the Millers, along with 14 other people, formed the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America, Inc. (PWDCA). She worked with dogs from both the Cintron and Cabral lineages to establish a stable genetic pool of PWDs in the United States at her Farmion kennels. Another early US breeder of PWDs was the actor Raymond Burr.
The closest relative of the PWD is widely thought to be the Standard Poodle. Like Poodles and several other water dog breeds, PWDs are highly intelligent, can have curly coats, have webbed toes for swimming, and do not shed . However, Portuguese Water Dogs are more robustly built, with stout legs, and can have a wavy coat instead of tightly curled. Also, fanciers generally do not dock their tails, whereas Poodle tails are customarily docked. Portuguese Water Dog eyes are consistently brown, and their coats can be black, reddish brown, white, or black and white.
PWDs have a single-layered coat that does not shed (see Moult), and therefore their presence is tolerated extremely well among many people who suffer from dog allergies. Some call PWDs hypoallergenic dogs, but any person with dog allergies who seeks a dog with these qualities should actually spend time with the animals before purchasing, to test whether the dog is truly non-allergenic to them.
Most PWDs, especially those shown in conformation shows, are entirely black, black and white, brown, or silver-tipped; it is common to see white chest spots and white paws or legs on black or brown coated dogs. "Parti" or "Irish-marked" coats, with irregular white and black spots, are rare but visually striking. "Parti" dogs are becoming more common in the United States. However, in Portugal the breed standard does not allow more than 30% white markings. Overall, white is the least common Portuguese Water Dog color, while black with white markings on the chin ("milk chin") and chest is the most common color combination.
The black portions of Portuguese Water Dogs have a bluish tinge to their skin that may be hard to notice underneath their black hair. Predominantly white areas have pink skin underneath and are more sensitive to exposure to the sun than black or brown areas. White hair is finer than black.
Depending on their genetic heritage, many brown PWDS, as well as a few lineages of black ones, gradually turn gray over their entire bodies as they age, with the possible exception of their ears and paws. Once begun, this color change, which is sometimes called "blueing", continues throughout the dog's life; it is caused by the growth of white hairs among the colored ones, much like the greying of a human being's head or beard hair."
Our friend Moira at Dog Art Today has also created a wonderful OBAMA DOG BLOG and we will send this to her and maybe she can create a Send Sadie to The White House connection and everyone can vote and write to The President and we will have a very happy ending, not just for Sadie but for all the dogs around Prosser, Washington (State) who need a LOT of help from us too.
Let's Get Busy.
Love and Licks,
Bob
Kernel found A Home, Sadie Can Too!
And BTW, this will solve the entire name thing, cause Sadie already has a perfectly good name and she can bring it with her.

Wow, Bob! You certainly have given us some very valuable info here and we really appreciate it very much! Thanks so much for all of your hard work.
We love you, Bob! Love, Blazer & Mom
Hi Blazer (and Mom)
I am so glad you are back with my Blogging. Maybe if everyone we know sends an e-mail to The White House, they will get the news? I sent them one yesterday, but I think they get a lot of e-mails and Sadie might get lost. But if everyone we know sends just one e-mail, that might work. What do you think about that?
Love and Licks,
BOB

I think this would be a PERFECT dog for Mr. Obama and his wonderful family! Sadie would be a great addition to the white house.
My dogs vote for Sadie!
I can't tell you how excited I was when we found Sadie on PetFinder. I had to cross my paws! What could be more perfect? Now the challenge is to tell The Obama Family, as needless to say, I can't just drive to The White House and tell them I need to talk. I sent an e-mail to The White House and maybe if EVERYONE sends one, they will notice us?
You Go Sadie!
Love,
Bob
