Blogathon #10: Lets Talk About Scooby
They are currently updating their web site, but you can make a visit anyway to Scooby North America and sign up for the mailing list.
Not familiar with Scooby? I'm pretty certain that all of us know about Retired Racing Greyhounds and how they need new homes when their racing careers are over. Our Diane has three wonderful greyhounds, named Amy & Molly (they are sisters) and Hammer. But a few years ago, Diane learned of the plight of the Spanish Galgos and her heart went to Spain. Soon she came home with my friend, Duke.
Each year she and a group of people go to Spain and work at Scooby Medina
In a nutshell (isn't that a wierd expression?) Scooby started out in 1987 as a shelter under poor conditions, providing refuge for the stray cat and dog population and the numerous Galgos (Spanish bred sighthounds) discarded mainly by the local coursing fraternity in the area of Medina del Campo, Valladolid. Scooby is being lead since years by its honorary president Fermín Pérez, in daily life a science teacher at the main senior school in Medina del Campo.
Spanish Galgos are hunting dogs, and when the season is over they are --- literally destroyed. This is even worse that what happens to my PitBull brothers and sisters and I have a very special place in my heart for these amazing dogs.
Here is a newsletter just released about what is happening RIGHT NOW!

Spanish hunters - the galgo massacre begins! Scooby appeals Posted: 02 Feb 2011 09:50 AM PST
Dear Friends, Today is February 1st. The end of the hunting season is upon us and for this reason our phones and emails have not stopped with people asking us for help to take dogs. Today we got two phone calls from Seville. The shelters there are full, and many of them have waiting lists to take dogs. But what is even worse that we heard today, is the galgueros are threatening to remove the microchip from the dogs and let them roam free in the streets, left to die. The thought of this is haunting. As you can imagine, the procedure to remove a microchip without any anesthetic, by a careless galguero would be extremely painful and would result in extreme infection when left unattended. It seems that they are become more and more ruthless with their ways to torture these beautiful animals. We need to ensure that this does not happen. Our immediate action is to rescue these animals but we can't simply commit to more dogs in our shelter without your support. It costs Scooby approximately 6000 Euros to feed 400 dogs for one month. There are 100 galgos minimum waiting for rescue. We are asking you to please come forward and let us know if you are able to help in any way, so these magnificent creatures don't suffer any long at the hands of the galgueros. The time is now to rescue them. If you can help, please send us an email to info@scoobymedina.com. We need a commitment from you before we can commit to saving these animals. We can't simply take them and then not have the means to care for them. Please share with all, in hopes of getting the word out. On behalf of these creatures, thank you in advance. I think this is pretty shocking stuff, but we all need to be truthful with ourselves and stand up for the rights of wonderful, loving animals who do not deserve this kind of treatment ---- anywhere in the WORLD. If you can help, I ask you please to contact Scooby North America, or directly to the Scooby Medina shelter and do whatever you can.
Diane tells us that they desperately need the following items and you can contact Diane directly if you can help her with any of this.
gloves (disposable kind)
vet leashes
fly paper (sticky paper to catch flies)
new or fairly new collars that can be sold in the Scooby shop to raise money for the shelter
dog coats
Diane will be heading to Spain again in late Spring (and I think my sister, Lydia, may actually be going along with her).... and they can take a lot of things with them, or ship them ahead of time.

Please help Diane to help these amazing dogs!
Love and LIcks,

AND OH...... I forgot: I wanted to share some pictures of my friends who live with Ms. Diane

This pile o' greyhounds with one Galgo ---- are: Duke - in the very back, Hammer -- the blond one and Ms. Molly who we call Mischief Molly.

This is Miss Molly and whatever is she wearing on her silly head? Yippers.

The very wonderful HAMMER!
Here is Duke, Spanish Galgos -- on his first day in his new home. Duke is very, very handsome, I think.AND FINALLY: Hammer again, this time with Amy (who is Molly's sister):

Thanks, Miss Diane for sharing all your gorgeous photos!

Such beautiful dogs. Thank you for spreading the word about them. Diane and Scooby are doing great work!

Thank you Bob for doing this wonderful work for a wonderful cause. I also want to thank you for posting about my mom's work and about all my friends in Spain. I am very grateful my mom adopted me.
You are a wonderful friend and I love you, your Mom and your sister Lydia. Can't wait for spring so that maybe you can run with me in your yard.
Love and licks,
Duke

I spend some time looking at the links posted - I had no idea this was such a plight in Spain. Found a link and address for the Minister of the Environment and a plea to write her urging her to pass Animal Protection Laws. I did so and hope this kind of sick cruelty can end. Thanks for posting the happy pictures at the end - for those 3 greys/galgos someone has made a world of difference, and that's all we can do, one dog at a time.
