Blogathon #11: Weight Gain Meatballs
THIS HOUR OF OUR BLOGATHON IS SPONSORED BY JODI CHECK, IN MEMORY OF HER BELOVED DOGS, 12 AND WILLIE NILLIE
Sadly when our dogs get sick they sometimes do not want to have very much to eat. When our wonderful Princess Daisy was so sick from her heart tumor, she didn't hardly want to eat at all. For many days she ate only Wagatha's Wonderful Dog Biscuits but we knew that she had to have something more substantial in order to fight her battle with Canine Cancer.
One of our wonderful friends gave us this recipe for Weight Gain Meatballs (contrary to the fact that some of us need to loose a bit of weight)..... and we made up a batch. Princess Daisy loved them and we have shared the recipe with lots of our friends since then.
Actually they sound pretty darn yummy if you ask me! But my Mom says I do NOT need to pack on any extra pounds since I am basically a Big Couch Potato. Has anyone ever seen a Couch Potato?
Let's make that the Trivia Question of the hour, shall we? Send me an e-mail at pbest@everythingandthedog.com and tell me what a Couch Potato looks like. Send pictures if you have them. I will pick out the very best answer and that person will win a T-Shirt AND an Annual Subscription to NOVADog Magazine.
Any one can win this prize --- so I am hoping to see entries from all across the country. A big thank you to
Janelle and her staff at NovaDog Magazine for donating this wonderful prize.
I wanted to let you all know that each year 2Dogs creates a Cancer Can't Keep a Good Dog Down, calendar and in the very first year which was 2009, our Princess Daisy was the COVER GIRL We were so proud of our princess and her wonderful attitude, and here is the cover of that wonderful calendar.

In her own words --- this is what Daisy thought about having cancer:
"It appears that The Princess has severe right-sided cardiac enlargement, which is caused by a very large tumor on the top of my heart. It is squeezing my poor aortic valve and so has caused right-side congestive heart failure. Wow. That is a long list of things wrong with on little heart, isn't it? And so my friends, that is the story of my heart problems and the sadness that currently flies around in our home. I just want you all to know that we are allowing ourselves to be sad only until tomorrow and then we are going to start again to be happy and to live life to its very fullest, one wonderful day at a time. And in case you were wondering, don't forget that The Princess is presently accepting gifts and treats. Pink is my favorite color, of course, and since treats are presently the only food product I care to eat, it really doesn't matter which kind you send me. I like Wagatha's the best, but any old treat will do."
Daisy lost her battle on August 18, 2008. But she never lost her spirit, and this photo shows exactly how she felt about cancer. Humor was Daisy's way of life and she taught us all that without love and laughter neither people nor dogs would be able to fight the brave fight. We miss her, always.
Love and LIcks,

Weight gain diet for dogs
Courtesy Julie Sanders, DVM
Ingredients:
- 3-5 lbs ground beef
- 4-6 eggs (I use a potato masher and mash up the shells until they are really small and leave them in for Calcium, but you can also leave out the shells)
- 2 cups vitamin fortified cereal (total, product 19, cheerios, etc)
- 1-2 cups oats
- 2 cups peanut butter
- 1/2 - 1 cup flax seed or olive oil
- 1 jar wheat germ
- 1/4 cup molassas
- add a few splashes of apple cider vinegar
Some people also add a little pinch of garlic powder but I don't bother as I've read mixed reviews of whether garlic is good for dogs or not.
Directions:
- Mix all ingredients well.
- Make into fist sized balls freeze in ziplock bags in groups of six so you can defrost a few at a time for feeding.
- Skinny dogs get one big meatball with each meal.

What a beautiful pup The Princess was. Mom used that meatball recipe to help one of our underweight rescue friends get well again. It sure works wonders eh?
