National Poetry Month

This is the official poster for National Poetry Month, 2011 and I like it.   I like poetry, actually.   Just because I am a PitBull certainly doesn't mean I can't have a sensitive side.   And I do.

Plus I have a wonderful idea.     How many poems do you suppose are written about dogs?   A lot I bet.

Some of them are not so good, but some are truly wonderful.    Here is one that I like.   I'm not sure why I like it, but I do.   When I asked my Mouse Person if he could help me find some poems about dogs, this is pretty much the first one that came along that made me smile.    I think that part of the job of poetry is to make you smile.   Even if you are a dog.    Then of course, it should paint a picture with words.    So this poem is called Love That Dog and is written by someone called Laura Venter

Love that dog
like a flower loves the soil
i said i love that dog
like a fower loves the soil
and i love to call my dog
'Hey there max'
while he wags his tail.
I SAID I LOVE THAT DOG,
LIKE A FLOWER LOVES SOIL!

I am NOT going to tell you where you can find this poem because it is my secret, and here is why.  I think we should have a contest until the end of April which is Saturday, the 30th.     Let's see how many poems about dogs you can find and send to me.     Good idea, isn't it?    It will make us all think about poetry and we can have some fun.

Your poem can be something that you wrote all by yourself, or you can send one that makes you smile, or makes you cry, or paints a picture, or one that you just really, really like.

We probably should have a winner, but then I am really good at picking winners.   We probably should have a prize too, but I'll have to figure out what that might be.    I think having a contest when you don't know what the prize will be is a fun thing to do.

So get your Mouse Person and get your books and find the very best dog poem that you think you just need to share.

In parting, and because it is currently raining "cats and dogs" here in Leesburg, Virginia, I will give you one more poem to think about:

The Dog by Ogden Nash
The truth I do not stretch or shove
When I state that the dog is full of love.
I've also found, by actual test,
A wet dog is the lovingest.

This will be fun.

Love and Licks,

Bob
