Making Dog Food in Spain
It's a little hard to communicate with our Lydia while she is in Spain, because when she is here we get to see her every day and we can talk, and text, and talk some more and we don't have to worry about the time differences or how many minutes we have just used up.
But between Lydia writing in her Journal (which you can find at our web-site Everything & The Dog
and the pictures she is sending home, we are getting a pretty good idea of how hard it is to run an amazing facility like Scooby when you are in a foreign country. It is hard to run a good, reputable shelter here in our own United States, but in Spain, the money just isn't as readily available and people have to make do.
Yesterday, Lydia and Diane did just that. They "made do". Actually, they made DOG FOOD. Here is what Lydia said in her Journal:
So as I have mentioned, dry dog food is very scarce here at Scooby Medina. When I return from Spain I will be working to see if I can't find some resource (dog food company, local grocery chains, etc.) that can donate food. In the meantime we have made one dog food run and will probably need to make another to buy dog food. This is supplemented by us making giant trash cans full of packets of wet cat food (they have a lot of cat food here) and layers of bread (which are donated by local bread factory) and sometimes donated carrots (the farm animals eat the carrots too). This mixture mixed with what dry food we have makes the dry food last longer.
This is obviously not ideal nutrition for these dogs, many of whom are starving when they arrive. Under the circumstances it is the best possible solution. Dog food is fairly cheap in Spain so if you want to help a monetary donation earmarked for food is a great way to help. Also if anyone has any dog food contacts in Spain or at least speaks Spanish and wants to try and contact that would be wonderful.
I'm hoping together we can all make a difference.
Here is a wonderful picture of Lydia and Diane, making do:

But they were very happy, later that same day, when a truck arrived and this is what greeted them!

That is a lot of kibble, certainly, but we need much, much, much more and it needs to keep arriving. The dogs who are fortunate enough to get themselves to Scooby deserve every possible chance to start a new life, and sometimes a new life starts with one good meal!
For some bizarre reason that only the Gods of Cyberspace know about, the information I gave you a few days ago about how to contact Miss Diane got all jumbled up and I don't think anyone can read it.
I will find the correct information and send it to you later today in a language that you can read.
But if you just can't wait one minute longer to get out your check-book and help Scooby buy some dog food, then you can send me an e-mail at pbest@everythingandthedog.com and my Mom will help me get that money forwarded to Spain specifically to buy dog food.
AND WAIT!!!!!!! Yesterday Mom stopped at The Mail Stop on Edwards Ferry Road in Leesburg, so that she could mail some packages and when she told Ms. Michele all about Scooby and the Spanish Galgo, and all the other poor animals, Ms. Michele immediately got out her little box of paper money and wrote a check to SCOOBY NORTH AMERICA. It is a really nice, big check too, so not only do we want to say thank you, thank you, thank you to Ms. Michele, we want to encourage EVERYONE in Leesburg who needs some help with shipping or receiving, or packaging, or ANY of the great things that Ms. Michele does in her little store, go right away to her nice place of business and SUPPORT HER.
Remember! What goes around comes around.
