The Longest Walk 3

A couple of days ago, when my Mom was driving into Leesburg from our home which is outside of town, she saw some people walking along the side of the road with flags and so she wondered what was happening.   Is this another parade and we missed it?

She read the flag and the signs the walkers were carrying and saw it was something called:  Longest Walk 3   Naturally because my Mom is almost as good of a reporter as I am, when she came home, she asked me to have my Mouse Person look this up on the internet.

This is what we discovered ---- from the web-site:

"It is the intention of the Longest Walk III to set in motion a series of plans that will return us to a path long followed by our ancestors. A path of planting, growing, harvesting crops and healthy eating. This habit linked to the daily activity of walking, running and general exercise will close the door to Diabetes, Heart failure, kidney failure and other related health concerns."

It seems that 40-50% of Native people have some form of Diabetes. It is a crippling disease that if left unchecked will doom the population of Native people within 500 years.

This is very frightening, and as Diabetes is something that is in our own family, and one of my two-legged brothers passed away from this disease a few years ago when he was only a very young man, the is a cause that we hope everyone will support.

These people are walking from LaJolla, California to Washington, D.C. and they hope to be in Washington on July 8.  There were two routes, a Northern and a Southern, who started on February 14, 2011 and will  walk across 26 states! That's a total close to 10,000 miles, all to bring awareness and to educate American on this devastating disease that affects so many of the Native people.

So please support this cause, if you feel you can.     All of the information can be found on their web-site at Longest Walk 3

Love,

Bob
