American Gointer

It's my first day back to Blogging since my dog-napping by Evil Beijing Kitty and her Flying Monkeys.   Yipes.     I still feel like I have to watch my back.

I decided that I would continue my Strange Dog Breed Research today and so I have found a new breed for you to ponder.   This is The American Gointer.   This is a cross between an English Pointer and a Golden Retriever.

Here is a picture I found   ---- this is "Buck".
Buck doesn't look particularly happy, does he?     Maybe he is just sad because his owner didn't have the special thing on their camera that makes the wierd eyes goes away.   Or maybe he is sad cause this isn't a very good picture and it got posted out on the InterNet anyway.

There must be more than one American Gointer, because as we were doing some research we found that you could actually buy a bumper sticker from Cafe Press, so that everyone will know that you not only have an American Gointer, but that you love it as well.

Thankfully the sticker has a border of 'dog paw prints" so at least the people behind you will have some tiny clue that you are referring to a dog, but I bet that there will be a lot of speculation as to exactly what a "gointer" really is.

Here is what I do not understand.    Instead of calling your dog a Gointer, why don't you just call it Pointer Mix.     Why call it something that sounds totally silly and causes people to guess which poor unsuspecting doggies got together to form the first Gointer.

Here's a good one for you.   How about a Plica?

Not in a million years would one guess that this is an actual dog which was created when a Basset Hound and an Ori Pei got together.      The Basset is self explanatory, but what, you might ask is an Ori Pei?     That my friends, is the result of a marriage between a Pug and a SharPei.       Oh My.

At least this little gal is totally cute and her Mom and Dad have the proper camera too:

                                                        This is a Plica

On the other hand, the OriPei isn't quite so cute:

                                                            This is Roxy

Actually, in my research I found out that the The Ori Pei was created in North America in the 1970's. A breeder by the name of Aaron Silver loved the Chinese Shar-Pei breed, but did not like all of the health problems that were commonly associated with it, such as eye tacking, skin problems, and hip dysplasia. He wanted to have a smaller version of the Shar-Pei without all of the health problems. He used the Shar-Pei and Pug to create the Ori Pei.

The Ori Pei is, by the way, also called the Pug-a-Pei.

And here is another thing........ no offense to the "designer dogs" but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of consistency in appearance amongst them.    Here for example is Rudy:

So Roxy --- first picture - looks very much like a SharPei to us.   Rudy, on the other paw, looks very much like a Pug.

After thinking about this for some time, I have decided that I don't really understand the entire concept of breeding a perfectly good dog in order to "create" a "new" breed that may not be such a good idea after all.

Maybe we should just let Mother Nature decide ?????????????????????????????????
