Retreived: 9/11

Today, as we know, is the 10th year since the horrible and tragic events of September 11, 2001.    I was not alive at that time, but we have a book on our coffee table, and Mom has showed it to me.     It is called "Dog Heroes Of September 11"
You can go to Amazon.Com and look inside this very nice book, but it will, of course make you sad.     But you will feel proud of the brave dogs and their people who worked so hard in those first hours, days and weeks.

There were nearly 100 dogs involved in the searching after September 11, 2001, and now there are 15 of them still alive.

An amazing lady from Holland, by the name of Charlotte Dumas, has gone to visit all of these dogs and she has created a new book called Retreived

You can pre-order this book from Amazon.Com now and my Mom and I are sending off our pennies so we can have one of the first copies.

Here is what we learned about the book:

Immediately following the attacks of 9/11, nearly 100 trained search dogs and their handlers--enlisted from 18 U.S. states--were deployed by FEMA to join the rescue efforts at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Alongside firemen and other teams sorting through the debris, the dogs worked tirelessly around the clock to locate survivors in the rubble--images of which intrigued Dutch photographer Charlotte Dumas as the events unfolded in the media. One decade later, discovering that only 15 of these dogs were still alive, Dumas succeeded in tracking each of them down, visiting and photographing the dogs at their homes throughout the U.S., where they all still live with their handlers. Composed at close range in natural light, Dumas' portraits--reproduced here in a thoughtfully designed paperback volume with Japanese binding--offer an intimate view into the everyday lives of these animals, now sharing the vulnerability of old age as they once pursued a common heroic goal.

We were lucky enough to be listening to The Animal House  on our Public Radio Station, which is WAMU 88.5 when Ms. Charlotte was on the program yesterday and was talking about her work as a photographer and how she came to come to visit all of these amazing (and now elderly) dogs.

This is a tribute to Search and Rescue Dogs everywhere  and is absolutely something that you need to have in your library in your home.       Please support Ms. Charlotte with her new book.

And most important of all.    Look into the eyes of these wonderful old dogs.    See that they still hold all of their memories and their sadness.  But they are all proud and courageous.      We can all learn a lesson from these dogs and that lesson should be that the events of September 11, 2001, will never be repeated.

Love,

Bob

    Good post today Bob Boo!

It is a day for reflection, a day for connection, a day to consider who we are and who we can become.
