My Mom and I were trying to make jokes before and say that we all needed a vacation, but the truth is that we are so busy this summer that there is absolutely no time for the pleasures of Blogging. Mom and I have been working in our office sometimes until almost midnight just trying to keep up, and whereas we are doing just that with our wonderful company Everything & The Dog a lot of our personal projects, including my Blog has fallen behind.

I know that all of you will understand and please not to blame me for not being a good Boy Blogger PitBull Reporter Extra Ordinary. You KNOW I love my job and will soon be able to continue.

Meanwhile, today we received some absolutely horrible news about our friend, Murphy --- the other half of Hudson and Luke and the most amazing dog who just finished a 2300 + mile walk for canine cancer. You know, of course, that you can learn all about Luke and DaBoys and the project by having your mouse person fly you away to 2 DOGS 2000 MILES

I am having a hard time blogging this, so Mom suggested that we take a letter we just received and copy it here. It pretty much explains it all at this time. This is from our friend Sheila Rinks:

Hi all

As you all know, Ginger & Murphy met Luke in Wichita, KS this weekend so Luke could take Murphy to CSU for treatment of his recurring nasal problems. Murphy's vet in Memphis thought he either had a foreign body in his nasal cavity or a tumor, & recommended CSU as the best choice to further Murphy's treatment.

Murphy had blood work drawn, a nasal scope & a CT Scan performed today at CSU with Luke & Hope by his side.

The diagnosis is nasal carcinoma. Those words were harder to type than I thought they would be-my hands are shaking.

A biopsy was taken of the area and a radiology consult is scheduled in a few days when the results are back. The doctors will also perform a chest xray soon to check Murphy's lungs.

The doctors reported that the cancer had not crossed over to the other nasal cavity and no lymph nodes were affected.

The preliminary treatment recommended was 18-20 rounds of radiation. The cost of this therapy was estimated at $4,000-$6,000.

Ginger has plans to set up a "Murphy Fund" so others may donate to cover the cost of Murphy's treatment. We'll post more information soon.

Luke will know more details and treatment options when the biopsy results come back.

As "trail magic" has it, CSU is conducting a study of nasal cancer, so it appears that Murphy is at the absolute best location for treatment.

Of course, Mommy G misses him & Luke dearly and wishes she could be with them right now. Hudson is in Memphis with her & still his silly self tonight but I'm sure he misses his Papi & Murph, too.

Murphy walked 2,300 miles for canine cancer. God (if you'll permit me to voice my personal religious view) did not bring him that far to let him be defeated by the very disease he walked to raise awareness for. We will puppy up! and fight this together.

Please keep Luke, Murphy, Ginger and Hudson in your prayers and thoughts. Thank you & God bless.

I know that Sheila is trying to be nice when she says that God didn't bring Murphy this far to be defeated by the very disease he walked so long and hard to help to fight. On the other hand. I am a PitBull and let me tell you (because we PitBulls happen to know)........ THIS IS NOT FAIR AT ALL AND WE MUST HELP IN ANY WAY WE CAN.

Last year, our friend Bev Hollis who is the best dog dog photo taking person we know took some wonderful pictures of Tucker and Frankie, and GUESS WHAT? Tucker has his very own day in the Workman Gallery of Dogs Calendar. Just look at this:

Isn't that just the very happiest picture you have every seen?

And the little note at the top of the page says " Acquiring a dog may be the only opportunity a human ever has to choose a relative" ---- and that is certainly the truth.

Tucker can do tricks too and so can his sister, who is named Frankie....... check this one out

Frankie can wink! I don't know how she does that, because I can't figure it out.

And Tucker can balance treats on his nose (although I'm not sure what the value of that one is, since if I have a treat, it goes in my mouth, not on my nose)

Anyway, we are happy that Tucker (and Frankie) are our clients and we love them very much.

So celebrate Tucker Selvey day..... teach your dog to hold a biscuit on his nose. HA

I must admit that I had to tuck myself into my crate and put my paws on my head to help with the noise from our neighbor's house, but my "sister" Scarlett just about had a heart attack. She shakes so hard during a thunderstorm that we think she might break and of course, she didn't enjoy the sound display yesterday either.

But guess what? Being the wonderful PitBull Boy Bloginator and Reporter Extra Ordinary that I am, I have discovered what could be a solution for the anxiety attacks many of us suffer brought on by loud noise and thunderstorms.

Check out Thundershirts & go from BANG to AHHHH in no time at all.......... seriously!

Here is what the nice people who make the Thundershirts have to say:

Whether for thunder, fireworks, or any other sound, Thundershirt can help your dog’s noise anxiety. And no training is required! For noise anxiety, just put on Thundershirt and observe the results. Over 85% of Thundershirt users see significant improvement in noise anxiety symptoms. Most dogs respond with the very first usage; some need 2-3 usages before showing significant improvement. If you are aware of a noise trigger coming (e.g. thunderstorm on its way), put your Thundershirt on your dog prior to your dog becoming anxious. But… it is fine to put Thundershirt on AFTER your dog has become anxious; you will still see good results. In most cases, it is fine to leave your dog in her Thundershirt for extended periods of time. Many Thundershirt dog owners will put their dogs in their Thundershirts prior to going to work if a storm is forecasted during the day.

We actually found out about Thundershirts from one of our clients, Ms. Cheryl Engel, who has a very big housefull of Cocker Spaniels and most of them are not good with noises. She absolutely assures us that Thundershirts work, so Mom says that she is going to order one for our Scarlett-Baby and we'll test it out.

Here is what else is pretty amazing. Thundershirts appear to help with problem barking as well, so now I KNOW FOR SURE we need to get one for Scarlett. If anyone is a problem barker it is Scarlett (she is --- after all a Rat Terrior)

You can check out lots of videos on Thundershirts home on the internet -- we found my Mouse Person asleep under the birdcage and convinced him to take us around and so we watched all of the videos. Pretty amazing.

This is what a doggie looks like wearing his very own Thundershirt. When we get ours to try on our Scarlett Baby, I'll update you on our success with it.

As my Mom always says, "can't hurt, might help".

So let's go back to the Dog Days. We found my Lazy Mouse Person in the bird seed bin, curled up and sleeping soundly, but I managed to convince him to get to work and I went out into cyberspace to find out about The Dog Days.

This is what I discovered:

Everyone knows that the “dog days of summer” occur during the hottest and muggiest part of the season. The Webster definition of "dog days" is

1 : the period between early July and early September when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs in the northern hemisphere
2 : a period of stagnation or inactivity

But where does the term come from? Why do we call the hot, sultry days of summer “dog days?”

In ancient times, when the night sky was unobscured by artificial lights and smog, different groups of peoples in different parts of the world drew images in the sky by “connecting the dots” of stars. The images drawn were dependent upon the culture: The Chinese saw different images than the Native Americans, who saw different pictures than the Europeans. These star pictures are now called constellations, and the constellations that are now mapped out in the sky come from our European ancestors.

They saw images of bears, (Ursa Major and Ursa Minor), twins, (Gemini), a bull, (Taurus), and others, including dogs, (Canis Major and Canis Minor).

The brightest of the stars in Canis Major (the big dog) is Sirius, which also happens to be the brightest star in the night sky. In fact, it is so bright that the ancient Romans thought that the earth received heat from it. Look for it in the southern sky (viewed from northern latitudes) during January.

In the summer, however, Sirius, the “dog star,” rises and sets with the sun. During late July Sirius is in conjunction with the sun, and the ancients believed that its heat added to the heat of the sun, creating a stretch of hot and sultry weather. They named this period of time, from 20 days before the conjunction to 20 days after, “dog days” after the dog star.

The conjunction of Sirius with the sun varies somewhat with latitude. And the “precession of the equinoxes” (a gradual drifting of the constellations over time) means that the constellations today are not in exactly the same place in the sky as they were in ancient Rome. Today, dog days occur during the period between July 3 and August 11. Although it is certainly the warmest period of the summer, the heat is not due to the added radiation from a far-away star, regardless of its brightness. No, the heat of summer is a direct result of the earth's tilt.

Personally, I can't really see the Dog here........ however I actually found all of this to be quite interesting. Especially since I am currently in an air conditioned room and not having to be out and about.

It is especially interesting that when it is very, very hot, people do some strange things. To prove it, just try checking out someone who figured out how to Bake Chocolate Chip Cookie on the Dashboard of their car.

Honestly. I wonder if this would work with Dog Biscuits?

Today is a very exciting day for all of us who support and love 2Dogs 2000 Miles - Luke, Hudson and Murphy and everything they have worked so hard to accomplish over the last two plus years.

Today is the big finale day, and I've been hearing from my Sister, Lydia who is in in Boston right now enjoying ALL of the festivities.

In this mornings newsletter from Uncle Erich (who stayed at home like me and Mom --- someone has to hold down the fort) --- anyway.. this morning, this is what Uncle Erich had to tell us.

Today's The Day! – It's been two years and almost 2400 miles in the making, but today's the day Luke, Hudson, and Murphy walk their final mile into Boston. First there will be the Memorial Service lead by Reverend Pattie Handloss. The Reverend, retired associate vicar of the Old North Church in the North End and Animal Rescue League of Boston overseer, will also perform a Blessing of the Animals later in the day. There's a nice article about Reverend Handloss here: http://tinyurl.com/25pztqb

After the Memorial Service, Luke and The Boys will lead the Final Mile to the Boston Common, followed by friends they've made from over 20 states. What a thrilling accomplishment! Luke and I would often talk about the hardships they faced during their walk – oppressive and dangerous weather, dog packs, unfriendly and weird people, bugs, bugs, bugs, finding safe places to stay, avoiding traffic, crossing bridges in disrepair – some swinging in the wind. We often marveled at the pioneer spirit that people had so long ago, and wondered how anyone survived. It brought us both a new respect for the accomplishments of those trailblazers, and I think it often gave Luke the courage and determination to go on – especially after surviving tornadoes, snow storms, recluse spiders, toxic Twinkies, and a host of other challenges that met them.

After the Final Mile, people will share an afternoon of fun at the Puppy Up! Festival in the Boston Common. After posing with The Boys for photos, Luke will have the ceremonial cutting of the hair, which will be donated to Locks of Love. He'll then be whisked off to get a proper haircut and get spiffed up for the Gala. In the meantime, Puppy Up! partiers will enjoy a Boston Police K9 Demo, Top Hat and Tails Canine Freestyle Performance, Owner/Dog Look-Alike Contest, Children's Pet Show, and lots of vendor and sponsor booths. The weather is supposed to be good too!

And then of course in the evening the Puppy Up! Gala gets underway. Dinner, cocktails, the Puppy Up! song sung by Luke, more live music, silent and live auctions, dancing – well, a regular pawrty! Murphy will give a live demonstration of his passion for The Honest Kitchen food, there will be a few speeches and much congratulation, and Luke will tell everyone about 2 Million Dogs, our next project.
It should be a full and wonderful day for everyone.

So my Mom and I are so excited and so happy for Uncle Luke, Hudson and Murphy and we are proud of them too. But, because I am the World's Best Boy PitBull Reporter Extra Ordinary, not to mention Boy Bloginator..... I want to tell you some stories behind the story. And because I have sent my reporting apprentice (my Sis) to Boston, she has told me all about Catie at the Copley.
I think I may be in love (again --- or yet? - or still?--- whatever - here is the official photo of Catie.

The Fairmont Copley is of course, the hotel where the big GALA dinner and celebration will take place tonight.

Catie came to The Fairmont Copley Plaza in 2005 when she joined the staff as Canine Ambassador, a role where she will meet and greet guests, be available for scheduled walks and runs, and be a community liaison. Catie was originally trained to be a guide dog by the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, Inc., but later Catie developed small cataracts. So Catie, who is now blind herself has changed careers.

The hotel says that ''Many guests, whether they are traveling on business or pleasure, miss the companionship they receive from their own pets. Catie makes guests feel more at home at the hotel. " ---- and Lydia can attest to this from personal experience. Of course she is having WillowBee and LilyBug withdrawals..... not to mention the fact that she misses me terribly. So she has been to see Catie quite a few times. Here is our own photo of Catie

That's some fine rug she has.
I wish we had a rug like that in OUR office......... and here is another:

Because my Mouse Person was feeling very helpful this afternoon and we wanted to find out how we could write to Catie Copley , we went out into cyberspace and learned that Catie is stationed near the St. James Avenue entrance where she will relax between walks in her cozy dog bed. The Concierge staff maintains an appointment book where guests can schedule walks and runs with her. In addition, she will also greet guests in the lobby and assist bell staff with room deliveries. When guests take Catie for a walk around the city, they receive a walk pack that includes a booklet highlighting Catie's favorite Boston walks as well as the commands that she knows and a biscuit for a walk well done.

Catie even has her own business cards and e-mail address. Guests may write to Catie at Catie.Copley@fairmont.com.

I don't have any business cards, but I have a BLOGGING business and so I will be sure to send Catie a copy of my Blogging and perhaps she will write back to me. I hope so. She looks very calm and organized. This is something that there isn't too much of around our office most of the time. Ha.

So I am sad not to be in Boston with my family and Mama Ginger, Mr. Luke and the boys, but as Mom says, someone has to stay at home and keep the fires burning. I have no idea why she would think we need a fire - it's almost 100 degrees out today, but whatever.

Lydia and our friend Ms. Diane have taken lots of photos of their adventures in the land of Baked Beans (Boston) and so over the next couple of days, I will try to put a little photo collection together to share with you.

Here are a couple however that I really like and wanted to share today.

The first is the Blessing of Murphy & Hudson:

And another of the beautiful Memorial Ceremony

And here is our Mr. Pat - patiently waiting to begin the final Mile Walk -----obviously Pat has learned to conserve his energy cause it is going to be a very, very long day!

I am so excited to hear all about the rest of the day - and I'll report in with all the juicy details! It's nice having an Apprentice Reporter in The Field......... I'm here in the newsroom, staying cool and reading e-mails!

Love and Licks,

Bob
...... Best Boy Bloginator in The Entire Known Universe
-------------- and who has his very own Girl Reporter too!

I'm a little jealous, because I think I might like to make a RoadTrip sometime. My Mom says it involves a lot of snacks and magazines. Oh Boy.

Well anyway, as I told you, Lydia, Pat and Diane are on their way to BOSTON for the big finale of Mr. Luke's Dog Walking Journey of Over 2000 Miles.

And guess where they are now? New York City! Here is proof

I guess this is proof.... how would I know? I've hardly ever been out of Virginia.
This could have come from anywhere. But then, Lydia sent me this photo of Ms. Diane, so now I know they are really on the road to Boston.

Diane looks pretty happy to be on vacation and not at work, but let that just be our little secret.

Love and Licks,

Bob
...... not on the road to Boston
.............. will report on all the hot news, however

Almost Home

I promised everyone I would be blogging this week about Hudson and Murphy and Mr. Luke and the fact that the end of their journey is almost upon us. They are almost "home", after over two years and over 2000 miles of long hard walking.

Now that I am faced with the daunting fact that the Journey has almost ended, I really don't know where to start with my Blogging.

There are so many things to say, so many things to remember, so many hills got climbed and so many valleys got slipped into. When they take that final step into Boston, will we all look around and say "is that it?" "Are we done now".

But no, this journey that was begun so long ago, is really only a beginning. I know that there will be lots of great things still to come and there is much work for us all to do if we are to make this trip across so many miles stand forever as an example of what one man and two brave dogs can do to help millions.

For tonight I am just going to ask everyone to think about what all of this means to each and everyone of us. We lost our beloved Princess Daisy to cancer and she was the very first Cover Dog on the 2009 Cancer Can't Keep a Good Dog Down Calendar.

Let's all do some thinking tonight about everything that Mr. Luke and Hudson and Murphy have done for pets everywhere. Thoughts are being thought by men who will be able to find a cause and a cure for this horrible disease, and those doctors and researchers have started down a path because they were asked to do this by one brave man and two brave dogs.

Let's all go to sleep tonight with glorious dreams in our heads and lots of love in our hearts. And when we wake up tomorrow morning, Mr. Luke and DaBoys will be one step closer to the final mile and ready to start their new journey (after a brief and well earned rest).

Love and Licks

Bob
......... thinking tonight about every single name on that Memorial Shirt
Guess What? I am back. My Blogging Status has been restored. Mom said I could just tell the world I had been on vacation for 45 days, but actually, I have been suffering from a combination of Blogger's Block and Nervous Trauma brought on by the presence of our cat, Bejing. I think it is better to be truthful. But in a way Mom was right, it was sort of nice to take a bit of a break.

Now I have come to the conclusion (in the last 45 days) that Bejing, The Evil Nemisis, is not leaving and I just have to learn to live with her. I will say, in her favor ---- the mousie population around here in being quickly reduced by usually one per day. Mom says this is a very helpful skill when one lives in the countryside. I think I could have easily performed this job if someone allowed me to wander around in a field most of the day, but Mom says that PitBulls don't eat Mice. Poo. I know for a fact that my Brother, Rusty, has been snackin' on them because he is in love with Bejing and follows her everywhere. Obviously he feels he is part cat, part Dauschund. Whatever.

There is a lot of news to share. I can never catch up all at once, but most of my important news revolves around the finale of the 2Dogs2000Miles Walk which is going to be happening very soon ---- so I'll be telling you all about that. Mom and I are not going to make it to Boston, but My Sis, Lydia and Mr. Pat are going and so is my friend Miss Diane.

And today, we are waiting anxiously because Mama G (who is officially known as Ginger - and who is the "keeper" of Mr. Luke and makes sure he is where he is supposed to be) --- she is on her way to our home right now and will arrive tonight. So Mom and I will get all caught up on the news about Boston and we'll start spreading the word. Meanwhile if you want to catch up on your own, you can follow some of these links which were collected by Mr. Erich.... the other half of the Ginger/Erich team.
Here is her sweet little face.

Well - Meet George!

No --- George is not coming to our family, but we wanted to show you how cute he is. He belongs to someone who works in the office of our neighbor, Jim, and yesterday Lydia went over there to meet him.

I told her we should dog-nap him and bring him home. Mom said, not a good idea, because then I would just have another puppy to help grow up.

So? And her point is?

Welcome to the world George! May you grow up to be as wonderful as my sister, Lily of the Valley.

Here is an update on their whereabouts, courtesy of my Uncle Erich, The True Bloginator, and my BFF!

Luke and The Boys recently hit Route 1 in Connecticut, the last major highway they'll be taking all the way in to Boston. Well, there will certainly be some side trips, but Luke posted a great photo of where they were just a couple of days ago and I snatched it off of Facebook and put it up on the blog. You can see it here: http://2dogs2000miles.blogspot.com/2010/04/almost-home.html I think the look in Hudson and Murphy's eyes tell it all … "We're ready for that nice king-sized bed we talked about at the beginning of the walk, Papi." To really grasp the enormity of the Walk and how far the three have come, you need to look at the map and see where they have been and how close to home they are: http://www.communitywalk.com/2dogs2000miles

The map is pretty simplistic in its rendering of everything the Boys have done in just a little over two years – hundreds of events with universities and grade schools and rescues and shelters, and meet and greets, and birthdays on the road, and scores of host homes and wonderful new families, and meeting mayors and congressmen, and river crossings, walking through the Appalachians, camps, trails, tenting in the woods and by the road, in churchyards and back yards and snuggles in the tent when it was scorching hot and freezing cold. Yes, the weather! And the bugs. And the fairly odd people they have encountered along the way … the "Are you homeless" questions, "Are you dead" questions, and of course the "Whatcha ya doin' on MY highway?" questions.

Isn't it amazing how far our Mr. Luke and Huds and Murphy have come? I know for a fact that I am much better suited to working on my causes from the comfort of my bed and in our office. I know that life on the road would be just too hard for me. There, I admit it, I said it and furthermore, Huds and Murphy are my heroes for taking this journey with their Pappi.

When they finally arrive in Boston in June, my Sister, Lydia will be there to greet them and participate in all of the GALA events that will be held. Mom says that she and I will hold down the fort in Leesburg, but of course, we will be blogging about Boston as fast as my paws can Blog. Lydia will send us lots of photos and we'll get her first hand reports as to all the happenings. So watch for Blog Updates about the Fearsome Threesome!

And guess what Mr. Luke went and did? He joined up with our friends from Rescue Ink and he got a TATOO! Oh boy, Oh boy...... now that is something I think I would like, even though I would have to be brave during the process since I hear that it is somewhat painful.

Here is my favorite picture of the Rescue Ink men and let me tell you, these guys know ALL there is to know about getting a Tatoo. Absolutely!

Luke got the tattoo he's been wanting for so long. He met with the guys from Rescue Ink http://www.rescueink.org/index1.10.html and had a special tat done. The tattoo artist who did his tat is Justin Hendelman who owns New York Kreep Kustom Tattoos http://newyorkkreepykustomtattoo.com/ but because Luke and The Boys are in Connecticut, the tat was actually done at The Iron Butterfly in Danbury, CT http://www.theironbutterflytattoo.com/ owned by Annette Mathews.

Luke wrote on Facebook: "INKED! Thanks to Annette & her team at Iron Butterfly in Danbury (and her Chihuahua mix Tito), The Rescue Ink guys - Joe, Big Ant, Johnny O, Stevie. They took time out of their jobs rescuing abused animals & stayed late til it was done. And Jerome & the artist, Justin, thanks 4 doing such a beautiful job portraying Malcolm."

I guess we'll all just have to wait for the unveiling. No pictures yet, but I'm crazy with curiousity trying to figure out what this will look like and more importantly --- where is it on Mr. Luke? Mom says we will have to make sure it isn't in some X-rated spot, whatever that means.

And another thing I wanted to remind you about is the Memorial Shirt program!
Shirt #6 is now in the works ----- my Mom has two of the shirts, and our Princess Daisy has her beautiful little name appearing right on them. Here is what Uncle Erich has to say

Yes, we're taking names and donations for the final Memorial Shirt of the Walk. As many of you know by now, Luke wears a special memorial shirt that bares the names of all the dogs (and, yes, even a couple of cats) who walk with them in Spirit, having lost their lives to cancer. These are Luke's angels, and the current shirt, number 5, has hundreds of names on it. With each new shirt that he has worn, the names on the previous shirts have been added to the new names. We already have over 100 new names to add to Shirt 6.

If you or someone you know would like to add your dog's name to Memorial Shirt 6, to walk with Luke and The Boys, please follow this link: https://co.clickandpledge.com/advanced/default.aspx?wid=33900 Make sure you tell us the name of the dog the memorial is made to so he or she can be added to this last shirt. And please make sure you get your name(s) in soon as the deadline for submissions is APRIL 18th. (I double checked with Ginger and she has spoken!) I think you'll really like the shirt – it's high quality cotton in steel blue with white lettering. Very nice and washes well. It is a great way to honor a beloved dog who will keep Luke, Hudson, and Murphy company for the rest of the journey.

Here is a picture of the Memorial Shirt, which I tried to make a bit bigger so you could appreciate all the names ---- this is being worn by Miss Ginger, or Mama G as I call her, and although you can't really see it too good.... you get the idea, I am sure.

I think that on the newest shirt, the names may have to go onto the sleeves, or down the back as well as the front, because there are more and more being added every day. This, in itself, is NOT a good thing because it makes us so very sad to think about all our friends, including our own Daisy, who have lost their lives from this awful, terrible disease.

But it is also a thing to remind us that we will never forget our friends and that there is HOPE, thanks to the good work of everyone associated with and supporting Luke, Huds and Murphy.

In 2009 they held the first Scooby North America Auction and raised enough money to help install a much-needed tile floor in the Hospital and Surgery Center at Scooby Animal Refuge in Medina del Campo, Spain.

If you go and find your lazy little Mouse Person, you can ask him to fly you away to Scooby Medina in Spain and learn much more about the wonderful creatures that are The Spanish Galgo. These dogs are desperate and they need our help.

Our friend, Ms. Diane, has devoted so much of her time to helping the Galgo, and I know that when you read their story, you will want to help. This year Scooby North America is raising funds to build brick shelters in the paddocks for the dogs. These brick shelters will replace the current wooden shelters that minimally protect the dogs from the elements and also require constant repair due to their weaker construction compared to brick.

If you Mouse It On Over to Carpe Canem Auction Page you can see all the great stuff that is available. I am thinking that I need to have my Mom bid on a new collar for me. This is the one I want:

---- Do you not think this looks like something I should be wearing?

Or maybe we want these wonderful NoteCards:

You can't see the writing on them - but this is what it says:
Racing like the wind, Heaven created ballet. And named it greyhound.

Mom says that is called Haiku. That is a wonderful form of Poetry from Japan.
I like it!

100% of the proceeds after shipping will be used to build as many brick shelters as possible in the paddocks to help protect the animals from the elements, so THANK YOU in advance for helping my friends in Spain.

REMEMBER! This auction ends at 7pm MST/10pm EDT on Wednesday, April 14.

Love and Licks,

We have a new Family Member at our home.

Her name is Beijing and she is a Kitty! A real live one. I'm sorta excited, but I'm not totally sure that Beijing and I can be friends. We are working on it.

Here is how I spend most of my days .......

This is the door to our office and I can watch our property from here and make sure that our Kitty is behaving herself. She is what is known as "an oudoor cat"....... Mom explained to me that many kitties prefer to live in the open and like to be able to hunt (and fish?) on their own. We still think Beijing needs to eat good canned kitty food.... so every morning she gets a can of something yummy.

Fortunately for me she eats her breakfast on Lydia's porch, because, frankly, I have become something of a nervous wreck, worrying about her outside all day long. Mom assures me I have absolutely nothing to worry about, because Beijing knows what she is doing. But what if someone comes along and tries to katnap her? Oh Boy.

Here she is --- Ta Da!
Meet Beijing Kitty. Notice her lovely jeweled collar? Is that appropriate for outdoor wear?

This is what outdoor kitties do a lot of. Mom explained they are sharpening their claws. Claws? I did not even know that kitties had claws. I have toenails. Yippers. Kitties are strange creatures.

This is a lot of responsiblity.
Another creature in our home for me to take care of.
What if I don't do a good job?
Oh my.
Life is stressful.

Love,

We had a Hamster once. Her name was Hortense. She was small. And black. And furry. And very, very, very annoying. It seems that our Hortense was very anti-social. Except in the middle of the night when all she did was run, run, run. That darn squeaky wheel was going non-stop. Started as soon as the lights were off and we were ready for bed.

Too bad Hortense isn't with us. If we could have done the event in the middle of the night and in the dark, we would have won for sure. Won? Won what?
The Hamster Ball Derby, which is Saturday, April 24 at 2pm at your local PetCo.

If you wake up your Mouse Person (not your Hamster, please ---- Hamster's are very very bad at navigating the internet place)...... you can go over to PetCo and get lots of helpful information for training your Hamster, and for special race days hints.

You can also watch a special video..... right here - via my Blogging. I have been hoping to figure out how to put video links in my Blogging, and Yahooooooooooooo ! We did it. So here is the first one, and now that I know it works, wait till you see the one about my friend Moose - howling at the TV during old Cary Grant videos. HA.

I am so excited about my news that I could just pee! You know, I am sure, that I take my job as The Boy Bloginator, PitBull Reporter Extra Ordinary, very seriously, and I am always happy when I find news that might bring two (or more) of my friends together. Especially if they are all working for a good cause. My Mom says it is called Serendipity when everything is in perfect order and things come together when you least expect them too.

So here is my story about Barkley House and how we discovered them and their good works.

Not too long ago, my Mom had another Birthday. Oh ugh. At Mom's age those are always ugly things. But our really good friend, Kris Greiner, gave Mom (and me) a subscription to Doggie Aficionado which is a very wonderful magazine, and if you aren't already a subscriber to it, you need to be. It is now our NEW favorite doggie magazine.

So we walked to our Snail Mail Box and there was our very first issue, Spring 2010. I love it when a new magazine arrives cause Mom and I can sit on the couch, get all snuggy, and start from the back going front, which is - in our opinion - the only way to read a magazine.

And sure enough..... the very first article we came across was all about Barkley House and Ms. Dr. Carolyn Henry who is a veterinary oncologist and professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Veterinary Medicine.

It seems that Ms. Carolyn was caring for a dog by the name of Barkley, and she found that there was a great need for a place where dog (and kitty) parents could stay when their friends were having cancer treatments. Sort of a Ronald MacDonald House, but for four-legs.

Here is Barkley:

And here is Barkley's story

About Barkley
Barkley, a Great Pyrenees, was driven daily by Sally Truscheit from Kansas City to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital for radiation therapy. When an injury prevented Sally from making the repeated trips, Dr. Carolyn Henry came up with the idea of a guest house which could provide many benefits and reduce some of the obstacles for pet owners whose animals are undergoing long-term treatments. Hence, the concept of Barkley House was born.

Dear Barkley,

I miss you—still—every day!!! But the most marvelous news!!! They are building a house in Columbia and naming it after you!! What an honor!! It will be the most marvelous place for dogs and cats. I remember, there were so many days after your treatments, and you were so sick, but we had to come home to Kansas City. How wonderful it will be now, that when other dogs and cats don’t feel like “driving” home, they will have a place where they can rest ‘til they feel better, and the people who love them the most can stay with them!! Pretty exciting! Thank you, Barky, for making a difference in my life and also for your inspiration to others.

You’re always in my thoughts,
Sally

And of course, the very first thing that popped into our minds, was to somehow introduce Ms. Carolyn and our friends Luke, Hudson and Murphy.... of 2 Dogs 2000 Miles Barley was a Great Pyr, just like Malcom, and you know that Malcolm was the inspiration for the remarkable journey of Luke, Huds & Murph.

Here is Mr. Malcolm:

I am very, very certain that at this very moment, Malcolm, Barkley and our Princess Daisy, are all at Daisy's Cottage at The Bridge, noshing on some wonderful gourmet delight and watching the home shopping channel, while they talk about organizing the next barndance. Can't you just see the three of them up there, hanging out together?

The purpose of Barkley House - it's Mission - is just this:

To build a temporary lodging facility where pets undergoing medical treatment at the University of Missouri Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital can stay with their owners. This guest house at the MU College of Veterinary Medicine will provide compassion, care and camaraderie.

Benefits
Temporary lodging for people and their pets, in a home-like environment, close to the teaching hospital. Veterinary students will have additional opportunities to enhance their client communication skills. Pets staying with their families may experience quicker recoveries. Anxiety will be lessened for both pets and their humans. Barkley House will serve as a prototype for similar facilities at other veterinary referral centers.

Isn't this just a wonderful, wonderful thing? And Ms. Dr. Carolyn and her friends are working very hard to raise the approximately $2 million dollars that will be necessary for the building, which might look something like this:

And do you want to know some more Serendipity Something?

Guess what kind of dog Dr. Carolyn has? Here is his picture, and his name is Blaze:

Blaze is, as you can see - one of my PitBull Cousins, doing wonderful work with Dr. Carolyn and a very, very talented artist who is called Ron Burns.

Here is how Mr. Ron and Ms. Carolyn came to be friends:

Burns Barks Support for Barkley House

The University of Missouri-Columbia College of Veterinary Medicine is pioneering the way people think of animal care through the development of Barkley House. When complete, Barkley House will provide a home-like setting for animal patients and their families while the pet undergoes long-term treatment such as daily radiation or chemotherapy. The concept behind the home is that animals, like humans, will experience speedier recoveries and less anxiety by having family members nearby during the treatment process. The proposed Victorian-style guest house will be near the Columbia Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, and will provide lodging for those traveling long distance to receive the specialized treatment.

When approached by Barkley House to help raise funds, Ron felt compelled with his whole heart to aid with his time and artwork. He sympathized with the families of these sick animals, who may not have the resources for accommodations, or just want to stay in a place that nurtures and understands the healing process, which can last for several weeks.

To help raise funds, Ron painted a portrait of the Barkley House “spokesdog,” Blaze, with a kitten companion. The composition of Blaze, and his buddy, on the couch is reminiscent of the Barkley House logo. The original of the piece was auctioned off at a fundraising event, for well over its suggested retail selling price, and a limited number of 95 editions on canvas have been produced, with a percentage from the sale of each one going to help break ground on the Barkley House. To donate to the cause, and receive a great piece of art, please click here.

Ron Burns, is as you might know, a very, very amazing artist and if you would like to learn all about him and his wonderfulness, you can wake up that Mouse Person, and suggest, kindly, that he fly you over to The Amazing Web Site of Ron Burns I am, of course, quite happy that Mr. Burns is helping in the fundraising for Barkley House, because Mr. Burns is also a champion of my cousins, all of us PitBulls who are, on a regular basis - MisUnderStood.

For the first time ever, Ron has agreed to permit his art (The original Cecil is shown below) to be reproduced on a T-Shirt and other items. His goal is to reach as many people as possible, and send a loud, clear message that our pets are prizes, not fighters. It's time we gave something back to the four legged family members who add so much to our lives.

Here's what The Humane Society of the United States had to say about Ron Burns, Cecil, and their campaign against dogfighting:

Our Prize Not Fighter tee was created by world renowned animal artist Ron Burns to promote his love for animals and personal passion against dogfighting. Based on his original painting of Cecil, a rescued pit bull mix, this fine cotton tee is a great way to speak out and help put an end to cruel and inhumane dogfighting!

Mom says she is ordering a T-Shirt, right now! and we will be making a nice donation to Barkley House.

So now you know all about my newest friends, and I'm sure you can understand why I would love to have Dr. Carolyn and her Barkley House cause, and Mr. Luke and da' boys, Hudson and Murphy, and maybe Mr. Ron Burns, all put their heads together to see how we can all help one another.

Mr. Luke will help to find the CAUSE for Cancer in Companion Animals and support Comparative Oncology and Dr. Carolyn will have her Barkley House - a real place, not just a dream. Mr. Ron will continue to help to raise money for all of us Prizes - who are NOT fighters and together these three people will make life just a bit better for all of us.

So join us, please, and make lots of donations! And come to Boston in June and be a part of Mr. Luke's next big step in the right direction.
I got an Easter Basket.
From my friend, Miss Melinda, who has real live bunnies living in her home!
Isn't that just a wonderful thing? My sister was sad because the Basket was to me, and my Sis said "Bob-Boo....... I don't see you coming over here and taking care of these bunnies.....so how do you rate?" HA.

I don't like to make my Sis sad, so I let her keep the dish-towels which were in the basket. I really don't do a lot of drying of dishes, so I thought that was fair.

And I let my Mom have the chocolates.
But I kept the Giant Bone! Oh Yum, tonight will be a happy night when I get to chew on that bad boy!

So thank you, thank you, thank you, Miss Melinda.

And you know what? If I could, I would help take care of your bunnies........ my Mom and SIster tell me all the time how sweet they are! The only buns I see are the ones who live in our yard, but Mom says it isn't really the same.

And since it is Easter and we are on the subject, I think it might be good if everyone could wake up their Mice People and ask them to fly them away to visit the very best place for Bunny Adoptions, Bunny Lu

Here is what you will learn about Bunny Lu, when you visit their very nice web-place with your Mouse Person:

Bunny Lu Adoptions, Inc. is a volunteer, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) domestic rabbit rescue and education organization located in Northern Virginia. We are dedicated to educating people about the joys of having a house rabbit(s) companion and promoting care that will give those companions the best chance at a happy, healthy, long life. Bunny Lu also provides temporary foster care to abandoned and neglected rabbits and arranges adoptions into loving, indoor, forever homes. While we do not condone the surrendering of rabbits, we understand that providing assistance to those people trying to improve their rabbits' quality of life sometimes requires finding a new home for the rabbits.

Bunny Lu Adoptions is a proud member of Petfinder.com , an affiliate of the ASPCA.

Since our founding in 1999 we have taken in over 1000 rabbits and placed 95% of them in new homes!

This is a picture of Mary Ellen and I am sure she will be able to answer all of your questions, if you are thinking about possibly becomming a parent to a Rabbit in need. This rabbit is named Spenser. I am not at all sure if I would like to meet him. He is very, very, large.

Miss Melinda's bunnies are not as large as Spenser, and I think I should start off by meeting someone smaller. Spenser sort of scares me. To be honest.

So do something wonderful for some Rabbits in Need - today - on Easter Sunday. It would be a fine day to do that. Go and visit the nice people at Bunny Lu and make a donation to their wonderful cause. We always talk about rescue for Dogs and Cats, but don't forget that there are many, many poor creatures in our world, and they are looking for love and care and help too.

Wouldn't this make you feel very happy on Easter? Doing a Kindness? Try it.

Love and Licks,

Bob
........ not quite ready to meet a large rabbit
.................. willing to meet with a smaller version

Every rabbit rescued by Bunny Lu Adoptions, Inc. is provided with a clean room, fresh food and water, toys, a litter box, love and socialization, and excellent veterinary care, including a spay/neuter procedure. While all of our time is volunteered, we need funds to pay for food, housing, vet care, transportation, etc., and adoption fees alone cannot cover all these costs. This type of comprehensive care can only be provided through the kind donations of people like you!

All donations to Bunny Lu, which is a 501(c)(3) corporation, are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. A receipt will be given to confirm all donations by January 31 of the following year.

You can make a donation on-line at our web-site Bunny Lu or if you would rather make a donation the traditional way, please send your check or money order to:
Bunny Lu Adoptions, PO Box 554, Haymarket, VA 20168.

Thank you!

Phoebe is the Mom to my biggest friend, Moose, and in addition to being the Chief Ball Girl at My Squeaky Ball Ms. Phoebe is also one of our wonderful dogwalking petsitter people at Everything & The Dog. And on top of all that, my Mom and Ms. Phoebe are always e-mailing stuff to each other, and sometimes, if I am good, Mom lets me have a look.

This is our picture of the day, and we think it is very funny.

Actually, I must admit, that my Mom had to explain this entire thing to me. However. Once, I got the concept, I do think it is worth sharing.

I think this is a wonderful picture for us to think deep thoughts about since it is almost Easter, and Easter is a very special holiday. The deep thought? Wouldn't it be wonderful if we all really did get along so well together and had such patience?

Love and Easter Lillies to you,

Bob
........ trying to find that darn rabbit

So Mom and I asked our Mouse Person to take us to Google and guess what? It would appear that now, instead of Googling someone, you must Topeka them.

Mom says not to panic...... she is pretty certain that by tomorrow everything will be back to normal, but in the meantime.......I figured out that if I went to my friends at Wikipedia --- I would get some information about April Fools Day and some pretty memorable pranks.

Unfortunately, this is what I saw on Wikipedia......
Do you think this is a joke too? This is all just too much for me to handle in one day. I think I should just quit before things get any worse.

My Mom and I have been very naughty Bloggers. Please notice that I have included my Mom and I am not taking all of the blame. I think we have Spring Fever or something. But whatever the excuse -- and you probably don't want to hear it anyway --- we will promise to start the second quarter of 2010 off a little better and get back on our Blogging Bus.

I can't believe that today is the very last day of the third month of this year. It seems like only yesterday I was thinking about Santa Claus and now I am faced with the Easter Rabbit. I am a little bit afraid of the rabbit, actually. I'm never sure when we open our door in the morning if I will find him sneaking around in our bushes.

Today is the first day in quite some time that we have gotten out of bed and seen a blue sky. Mostly it has been gray and gloomy and rainy and just hasn't seemed worth it to even bother to get up. But this morning, it is much more cheerful outside and our daffodils are all starting to bloom and that certainly makes for a more interesting landscape up here on our mountain.

I think Daffodils are probably the happiest flower that there is. There is just something so wonderful about them and it makes it very hard to be depressed when you see their little yellow faces peeking around the corner at you.

So have a very Daffodil Day - the last day of March, and I promise that starting tomorrow which is the first day of April, Bob will be a better blogger.

Love and Licks,

Bob
----- was depressed
---------- getting better
I would go to all of the dog bakery places FIRST.

Then I would go find some of my cousins. I am betting that if you go to the booth for Bully Paws - Pit Bull Patriots, you may be able to find a wonderful Pit Bull to adopt into your life.

And guess what else? Guess Who I would Go to See Right Away?

I would go and meet the people of Rescue Ink who will be gathered in Booth 117. If you have not seen the TV show of the Rescue Ink people, you should catch up, but I bet they will be very happy to talk with you when you see them at the Expo.

Judging from this picture, I'd say there is little chance that you will miss them or confuse them with someone else. HA.

So I am hoping that all of you will try to go to the Super Pet Expo over this weekend.... there is still time to go today, or you can go tomorrow and meet my SIster (and maybe even my Mom).... but alas, not me. Poor Bob.

Love and LIcks,

Bob
....... making sure my sis buys me a Rescue Ink Tee-Shirt!

Oh and BTW, did anyone not wonder what I have been doing for the past couple of weeks, because I certainly wasn't blogging?
