Now Everyone is Confused

Yesterday, February 2, 2012, was Groundhog Day.

I have just about given up on the Groundhog because I have decided that (a) I don't trust the little rat and (b) which one should you trust if you were in fact going to trust one of them?

I have been doing some checking and I have discovered that there are many more than one groundhog wandering around claiming to be able to predict the weather and it occurs to me that one of them has to be wrong. So from this date forward, I am just going to ignore Groundhog Day completely.

Most people are lined up to listen to Phil, who lives in Pennsylvania, but I have learned that Phil has a rival by the name of Chuck, who lives on Staten Island in New York.

Here Is "Chuck" and I am actually wondering what "Chuck" and Major Bloomberg have been discussing as they both have rather odd looks on their faces.

"Six more weeks of sun and warm weather," Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said as he hoisted the rodent prognosticator. "And a Giants win. Go Giants!"

Chuck tumbled out of his impressive wood cabin — complete with solar panels — at 7:30 a.m. to trumpet calls and chants of his name from a crowd of about 100. This was not the Chuck of 2009, who refused to come out of his house as the mayor offered him some corn for breakfast. When the mayor finally reached inside Chuck’s house and tried to pull him out, he was rewarded with a bite to the index finger. "

Now I ask you?     Does it seem wise to stick your hand in a groundhog's home and attempt to pull him out?      I'm a PitBull and I have more brains that that.

In any event, it would appear that this year Chuck says that Winter is Over -
Chuck — or Charles G. Hogg, as he is known in more formal company — was eager to please today. When the door to his cabin opened, Chuck plopped right out and onto the ground. Despite their rocky past, he barely struggled when the mayor picked him up and showed him to the crowd. He didn’t even seem to mind when Bloomberg waved his finger (safely ensconced in the thick glove, of course) in front of Chuck’s little mouth.

Here is the problem.      The OTHER ground-hog, whom most people consider to be the "real" groundhog, is named Phil and Phil has made a prediction that is the direct opposite of Chuck.
    This is Phil.   Punxsutawney Phil, to be exact.

After some research this is what I discovered about our friend, Phil:

At 7:25 a.m. yesterday morning, amidst mostly cloudy skies, and temperatures in the low 30s, Groundhog Phil saw his shadow in the little town of Punxsutawney, Pa.

According to folklore, Phil’s sighting of his own shadow means there will be 6 more weeks of winter. Had Phil not seen his shadow, it would have meant “there will be an early spring.”

If Phil’s forecast is right, it signals a dramatic reversal from the mild weather pattern affecting much of the country. Many parts of the central and eastern U.S. have seen temperatures 20 to 30 degrees above normal in recent days. On February 1, just 19% of the Lower 48 had snow cover compared to 52% at this time last year.

Historic odds heavily favor a forecast for winter to last deep into March. Since the Groundhog’s first prediction in 1887, Phil has seen his shadow 99 times and failed to spot it just 16 times. There are 9 missing years in the record, but Phil has issued a forecast without exception.

I actually found my Mouse Person, MOPE, and together we checked out The Washington Post You may want to hop over there and read a bit more about Phil, as certain people are calling him a Punk and implying that he is not correct nearly as often as his fan club says he is.      Of course not.     Think about it.   Why would your club of fans say that you are wrong?      Naturally they are going to say you are right.

And so I have made my decision.    I am going to rely upon my own good PitBull sense in the future.    I am not going to depend upon a stupid groundhog to tell me if I should wear my coat when I go outside to poop.

February Dog Events in Virginia

Last month I found a very helpful site that I wanted to let you all know about.    When you have a few moments later today (let him sleep for awhile, he'll be less grumpy), then find your Mouse Person and ask him to fly you over to Bring Fido   This is a really great site that will help you find all kinds of events and places where us dogs are welcome to come and stay and I think you will find a lot of useful information.

One thing I really like about this site is that it has a listing of all the restaurants in your area where you can go and take your dog to dinner.      My Mom is going to have a birthday next week and I would like to go out to dinner with her, so perhaps we can check out one of these places and report back.    That would be fun



We will probably have to shop around for a while before we find a Sushi Restaurant that lets me come in and eat fish with my Mom, but that would just be the most wonderful thing in the world, at least from my standpoint.    My Mom sometimes brings home a "doggie bag" of Sushi for me (although usually she and my sister Lydia have eaten every single bite and only just tell me about how wonderful it was).    So I am currently on a mission to find a Sushi Restuarant that will allow PitBulls to dine with their Mom's (at least one day a year).

I'll keep you posted.

I can't believe it is already February.
My Mom has been sick with a bad cold and you know when that happens, I have nobody to help me write my blogging.   Thank goodness she is much better this morning, because a lot of stuff is going to happen in February and I need to be back in the Blogging Business.

So for today I need to ask you for some help.

Maybe you will remember that last year NoVa Magazine named me Best Blog in Northern Virginia. (well actually, we tied with the town of Alexandria for first place, but I don't think that counts)......

I have had my birthday now, so it is time for our little Smudge to grow up too! Smudgie just turned one year old this week-end and now she is very excited because she thinks she is all grown up.     I didn't tell her that she still had a lot to do before that happens.


Smudgie got some great presents, but frankly nothing nearly so wonderful as my Blue Flying Monkey.

She got to experience her first real snow too and I don't think any of us are too happy about that! Except, perhaps for our friend, Nigel, who has been praying for snow since the Fourth of July.

Here he is, eating snow...... like he grazing or something.   Yuck.

So besides the snow and the fact that it is very slippy and icy outside right now, and Smudgie having her birthday, and me having my birthday, I also have new pictures of our little Shorkie (who still is missing a name, by the way)

She is 6-weeks old now and before we know it she will have a name and come to live with her new Mom, Ms. Jo.



So now that I have brought you all up to date on what has been happening around here, I have decided that this is a good day to go back to bed.     Mom is very grumpy because she has to go out and walk dogs for a few hours.    I told her if she was good and didn't complain she could play with my Flying Monkey when she gets home.

Somehow that didn't seem to impress her.

Oh well.

Happy Birthday to Me

Yipee.   Today is my big day.     I am five years old and Mom says I don't look a day over two! HA

        And guess what I got?       A FLYING MONKEY !!!!!!!!!    And I love him!



My sister Lydia had a hard time trying to take my picture, cause that Monkey can really fly.    All I have to do is throw him up into the air and arms and legs go everywhere and then I catch him!!!!!!

This is going to be my Best Birthday EVER!!!!!!

The Big Day

A Sad Day for All

Worry, Worry, Worry

Oh Boy.
I have so many things I have to worry about, and now I have yet another.



It seems that a fox has taken up residency in our back yard..... probably under our garden shed, and from the sounds that are coming from that area in the middle of the night, it would appear that the fox is ----- how shall I say this? ---- having sex.

I'm not at all sure what having sex is all about and Mom says that is one thing I DO NOT need to worry about, and if it involves all the screaming and yelping coming from our yard, I can tell you I am just fine not knowing all the details.

I found my Mouse Person and we flew over to visit The Virginia Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries and this is what we discovered about the Virginia Red Fox:

The red fox is the size of a small dog, with a total length of 39-41 inches and a weight of 9-12 pounds. It has prominent, erect ears, a pointed nose, and a long, bushy tail with white tip. The fur is long, soft, with the upper part reddish-yellow, black-tipped on the shoulders. The breeding season is from December to February, with a peak in late January. A litter of 4-7 pups is born in a den in late March or early April. The male may bring food to the den until the female can leave the pups a short time, then they both hunt. They remain with the pups until dispersal. . They are generally nocturnal and non-migratory, and usually use the same area for life. The fox is known as sly because it has many sophisticated tricks for losing predators like backtracking and running on fence poles to confuse or eliminate tracks. Longevity is about 5 years.

I'd say that pretty much fits with what is going on in our yard.   So now I have a Black Bear to worry about, a Red Fox and of course The Flying Monkeys.

Frankly, I am not sure which is worse, but I can tell you, I am not going near the back yard area ---- or the trash can area ---- AND I am keeping my eyes open for those darn monkeys.

Since I posted the photo of my friends Nigel and Saffron in their new SnowSuits, I have received a couple of e-mails letting me know that some of my other friends also received new clothing for Christmas.    Just to make it clear.   I DID NOT get a new sweater.
     I think I should have one. HA.

So here is my friend JeanLuc in his Christmas Coat:

I will have to ask JeanLuc if his Mom knitted his sweater all by herself, because, as you might remember, his Mom is the creator of My Squeaky Ball   and she does some very fine knitting.   If you don't have a Squeaky Ball of your very own, you should be sure to ask for one at the very first opportunity.

I also want to update everyone on the Name the Baby "contest" so that we can help to find a wonderful name for our new little Shorkie



Her new Mom, Ms. Jo, reports that Little One was the first of her litter to try out her legs and remains the first to jump up and run over to play or say , "Hi!"       I asked Ms. Jo to be sure and send us some new pictures as soon as she has one.

Whew, missed it again!

Mom came home yesterday and told me it was supposed to snow.      I immediately had to pray to the "NO SNOW" fairies so that it wouldn't happen, and fortunately, I was successful.

It isn't that I don't understand that we need to have some snow some of the time.     I just want to limit the snow days to one or two a year.      I have very delicate toes and I just do not appreciate wading thru a bunch of white, cold, nasty snow in order to go potty.      I guess I could be like my brother Rusty (the dascshund) and just absolutely refuse to go outside and have a potty pad imported, but that isn't really my style either (and furthermore I think he is the worlds biggest wuss and is disgusting).

My friend Nigel, the Shar-Pei, LOVES the snow.   He got a new snow suit for Christmas and now that is all he talks about.

Nigel's sister, Saffron, also got a snow suit, but she is like me and spends most of her day praying to the snow fairies to stay away.      I admit she does look rather fetching in her new outfit, but still....... suit or no suit, I just want this winter to be gone so we can have spring and watch our daffodils again.

The Sloths Need You!

So my Sister, Lydia, has an I-Pad Thingy and I think I need one of them.      Mom says maybe we will get one in a few months so I have something to look forward to.     I think it would be very handy for my Blogging Business.

Anyway, one of the "apps" that Lydia has is Cute Overload and I am convinced that we all need more cuteness in our lives (especially in the morning), so I like this a lot.   Fortunately, we can also go and visit this place on our computer, but if we had an I-Pad Thingy, we wouldn't have to be just in one place to catch up on our daily cuteness.

My Uncle, Marshall, who lives in Colorado (I wonder if he is snowed under yet?) has a very strong liking for Sloths.    I never knew what a Sloth was, but now that we have some cuteness in our lives, I can see what they look like and read all about them.     After I got over my initial reaction, which was that they have very BIG eyes, I find that I like them.



In addition to learning about Cuteness, I was also able to find my Mouse Person and fly to Costa Rica and visit The Sloth Sanctuary   and that is how I know that the Sloths Need Your Help.



The Sloths even have a BLOG ---- but I'm betting that one of them is not doing the blogging because it is very hard work and takes up a lot of time.     I have learned that Sloths move very, very slowly too..... and if you were blogging at a slow speed it might take up even MORE of your time.

It appears that late in December, last year, a story about the Sloth Sanctuary was on Animal Planet and then an article was in our Washington Post, and so now people are learning about the Sloths and all of the things we could do to help them.



So find your Mouse, pour another cup of coffee, and go and learn all about the Sloths and what you might be able to do to help them, as obviously --- from the photo above ----- they are needing a lot of stuff!   HA.     No.   Seriously.      Help a Sloth, it would be a good thing.

Our Friend Barkley

Christmas is over now, of course, and I am hoping that Santa and his Elves brought everyone something very special.

One of our wonderful Everything & The Dog clients is named Barkley and his pet sitter is my German Grammy, who is called "Omi".     Omi spoils Barkley rotten, if you ask me, but then I must admit that what good is it to have a grammy if you can't get spoiled by her?    HA.

So in any event, after Christmas, Omi went to do overnights with Barkley and she brought him a after-Christmas gift.      As you can see, Barkley didn't like his present one little bit.   HA.

We have two more suggestions for naming our newest little client......... probably I will just fill you in at the end of this week as to all of the suggestions, but I wanted to tickle your imagination so "Little One" gets a proper name.



So now, in addition to our first choices (which were mostly mine ---- LOL) we have -----

            Skoshi (pronounced Sko-she and means Little One in Japanese
and
          Butter Cup     (which you know how to pronounce and is a very pretty little flower)

When making her choice, our Miss Jo should probably know that Buttercup, is also one of the PowerPuff Girls, so dependent upon the soon to be sure to show up personality of our "Little One", perhaps Miss Jo will find that name to be very fitting.



Among other things, Buttercup likes her green blanket and dislikes the rain and spiders.      So there.

It's All in the Name!

Yesterday I wrote about how three of our long time clients for Everything & The Dog clients and true FRIENDS, have each opened their home to a new Family Member.    We are so excited to meet them all, but in particular to meet "Little One", as we now call her cause she doesn't have a name.


                                                           Here she is at a tiny four weeks old.

"Little One" won't be able to leave her Mom until she is at least TEN weeks old, so I asked our client, Jo, if we could have a Name That Dog contest.   (As in all of our contests, we may or may not have a prize ----- because this is, of course, a way to HAVE FUN and be creative)

One of Jo's friends, who is Vietnamese, nominated the name of XiuXiu (which is prounced as "seeooooseeoo" and means "Little Bit" in that language.

Since we were settling on "Little One" (just for now) , seems as if this person is on the same tack.     But I think that because she is such an unusual dog   (and will become so brilliant and beautiful too), that she deserves a wonderful and original name.   Not that XiuXiu isn't wonderful and original, but then it is rather hard to pronounce if you don't know the language.

Our entry into the contest (and yes, I can enter because I thought this up in the first place) is Pequeña
                     This name mean's Little One in Spanish

We also like Aponi (pronounced ah-pah-nee) as this means BUTTERFLY in the Blackfoot Language (American Indian).    Also Lomasi (pronounce loh-mah-see) which is the Hopi (also American Indian) word for Good Flower.

There is a cute list of names for Little People at Names for Little People   but I'm not going to influence any voting now.       I have made my three entries (did I tell you that everyone could send in three names? ---- opps, sorry)

So put on your thinking cap and come up with a really terrific name for Jo's Little One.

Of course Jo will have the final say and will pick through any list we send her, but I bet she is currently surrounded by books and web-searching results.   This is just sooooooooo exciting!

Last year, many of our good friends and clients had dogs and kitties that traveled away from this life and onto The RainBow Bridge.    All were said stories but many were sadder still, as two of our friends were killed by a very sick person who decided to poison them, and one suffered a terrible accident, that could have happened to anyone, but instead took our friends life from him.

Princess Daisy has just sent me a message from The Bridge and declared that she is terribly busy sorting out right now, and so please, could we hold off a bit.     The Princess is such a whiner baby. I swear.   I already sent her our Lily of The Valley to help her out last year, and now, here she is complaining again.

But in any event, I wanted to introduce you to some of our newest arrivals, and to ask all of you to give them a warm Everything & The Dog welcome.

First off - here is Mattie   Mattie doesn't look terribly happy in this photo, but since it was her first day in her Forever Home, she is probably still getting adjusted.    Yep....... by the end of the day, here she is with her new brother, Zackey

Zackey was a very, very sad pup when his big brother, a gorgeous yellow lab named Wally, had to leave for The Bridge.     We knew that when his Dad, Bill, would be ready then a new friend would come to live in their big, perfect for doggies, house.    Sure enough, along came Mattie, via Lab Rescue.

                      Welcome to the World Mattie and please take special care of my Zack-Man.

AND NOW. Don't take a deep breath and blow it out, cause at 2.2 pounds, this little one might just blow away:

This is Daphnee who has come to live with our wonderful friend and client, Janice.       Princess Daisy says that Daphnee's "big brother and sister" who were named Hank and Fiona, have taken over complete Angelic Duties for Daphnee.   They vow that nothing bad will ever happen to her and that she will live a long and totally wonderful life with Ms. Janice.     They even said that she can take over the house completely and have every single one of their toys, or anything else see might want.

And now..... get ready for this little gal:



Our client, Jo, is waiting anxiouly to be able to bring "Little One" home with her.   At just four weeks, she still has to stay with her Mommy for a bit longer.         In case you wonder, "Little One" (as we call for now for lack of a real name), is a dog called a Shorkie.     This means that her Dad is a Yorkshire Terrier and her Mom is a Shiz-Tsu.   In the Shorkie breed standard that is ALWAYS the case, never the other way around.

In general, we aren't overly encouraged to have "designer breeds" make more "designer breeds", but after all  - in truth, all dogs were at one time mixed breeds and then became standard at some point in history.    The breeder who is working with the Shorkie's has gone so far as to form the Shorkie Club of America just for the purpose of establishing breed standards and ultimately have the Shorkie Breed recognized by the AKC.

If you would like more information about Shorkies, please ask your Mouse Person to fly you to Shorkie Club of America and there you can learn all about them.    Also, if you are thinking that a Shorkie might be an ideal dog for your family, please make sure that this symbol is on any web-site you visit as it is very important so that you would not have a puppy that hasn't come from a loving, caring home.

Lydia said that when she came into the house, Opie was sound asleep and obviously dreaming of Sugar Plums.

The Parade of Roses

In a little while my Mom and my Sister, Lydia, are going to sit around and watch a bunch of roses parade down a big street in Pasadena, California.    Normally they would have done this on the first day of January, but if New Year's Day falls on a Sunday (which it did this year), then the Parade of Roses happens on Monday.

This is obviously a two-legged "thing", because what dog in it's right mind would sit and watch flowers marching? HA.

Actually, this parade is pretty interesting and once you locate your Mouse Person, you could ask him to take you to cyberspace and visit the Official Web Site .     My Mouse Person was sleeping in a candle tin and Mom almost lit him on fire before she noticed him.    That would have been awful.    Anyway, we went over to visit and actually learned quite a bit about the parade.

The Parade started in 1890 when some people who lived in Pasadena decided they could make their friends on the East Coast jealous because of blooming flowers and oranges, so they decided to hold a parade.   I guess that is as good an excuse as any.



Every year the Parade has a theme and this year that is Just Imagine........ and I am pretty sure that some of the floating vehicles will be very creative.

I was concerned that dogs would not have a place in the Parade, but we did look on the list of the names of the participants and we found Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Pet Foods, Inc.

I must say, Mr. Van Patten has some imagination.    This year his floating vehicle will have a beach, with sand and water and surfing for dogs.   Check it out..... this is Newman:



I think I could do this.    I am going to see if my Sister will take me to California the next time she goes to DisneyLand and maybe I can learn to surf.      If these Bulldogs can do it, I am certain that I can do it too!

Of course, the actual star of the show will be Tillman, and this is his fourth year skateboarding and/or surfing in the Parade.   Mom and I watched some videos of him doing his skateboarding, and I must admit, maybe it is just a bit on the difficult side.



MOPE, my Mouse Person, took longer than normal to fly around and find the best place to get some information about the Natural Balance floating vehicle, but finally we decided that The Anipal Times had some good information and photo graphs too.      So go and check it out.

So maybe this Parade will be worth watching, just for this one floating vehicle.     So go turn on your TV and get all comfortable and I'm going to start practicing for next year.      I think I can do it.

Happy New Year!

Can you believe that it is now 2012 ?      Wow.    And very soon I will be five years old!    Yep! On January 20th, and then a couple of days later on January 22nd, our little Smudge will be ONE.     2011 has flown by and lots of changes have taken place, but most of them were for the good.    I think that the year 2012 will be WONDERFUL, however.

I am not making New Year Resolutions.    Mom says when we do that we just set ourselves up for immediate (or almost) disappointment.     It is better to just do something good, or something that you have been wanting to do, but not make a big deal about it ahead of time.   That makes sense to me.



We thought it would be good to start the New Year off with a quote

"People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas." Author unknown, as quoted by The Huffington Post.

So Mom is starting off 2012 by having a cookie for breakfast. A big cookie.     Mom says it probably has a lot of the food groups in it, so we shouldn't worry.    HA.

Actually, losing weight is one of the top resolutions that 2-legs make and then break.   That is pretty interesting.    And in case you do want to make that resolution here is a hint on how to keep it.   You must have a PLAN.

The National Institutes of Health suggests one key to losing weight is to develop a healthy eating plan. This plan should emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and dairy products; include lean meats, poultry fish, bean, eggs and nuts; and be low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt and added sugar.

Oh well.    I think Mom will be back on her bowl of oatmeal for breakfast every day, starting tomorrow.     After all, it seems to me that so long as you don't eat cookies every single day (for breakfast), that having one on the first day of the new year is going to be OK.    Besides, it had powdered sugar on it, which of course falls to the floor, so I was able to have my fair share.

So Happy New Year to everyone and my wish for 2012 is that I will meet a lot of new friends and that I do not have to have my toenails trimmed too often.     That should just about cover all the bases, don't you think?
